More
than just a stopover, the Auvergne deserves a longer stay.
…it was quite obvious when looking at the map, getting ready for
the holidays.
Clermont-Ferrand in t he Puy de Dôme is equidistance between
North and South, and east and west of France, and would be an ideal stopping
place in order to get to the Ocean or the Big West. But that was not allowing
for the setting sun on the Chaîne des Puys, the
serene majesty of a Roman church at the bottom of the valley or the glimpse
of a little trout stream. And there inevitably, a one night stopover,
so beneficial, echos frustration: one comes back with walking boots and
a little more time…..
The Auvergne,
the gem of the Central Massif with its special appearance, has developed
a lively and captivating personality opening into 3 features: an immense
nature reserve ( that of the Auvergne Volcanoes)with
its varied and genuine countryside. It’s an open air museum, offering
a display of architecture whether in the country or the city (Clermont-Ferrand,
Issoire, Riom), of Roman churches (Orcival, Saint Saturnin, Saint
Nectaire …) or of castles of all ages. Lastly, it is a refuge offering
delightful immersion into peacefulness and quiet in the many regions privileged
by their silence and calm where one is able to do all the open –air
activities possible.
